ESP on a car I bought...

So semi-interesting story...

I bought a 2011 Explorer end of summer last year from a dealer that had pretty good pricing. Since it only had 29k miles on it, I didn't even worry about service plans.

Fast forward, a speaker started to go out on driver side door. Had some spare time today so I went to a Ford dealer to see how much it would be to fix.

They look up my car... not only is it marked as CPO so I get 100k trans/engine warranty, the previous owner also bought a bumper to bumper to 100k w/$100 deductible. I currently get warranty service until next month through the CPO too.

Well, they said the other warranty that is good until 2018 can be transferred to my name for $75... IF I can find the original owner. He needs to approve the hand-over to me so he has no rights to cancel the coverage.

I get the impression the car should stay covered as long as the original owner doesn't get a refund on the remaining warranty coverage. I think if I track down the original buyer, he may just go get a refund on the balance.

You guys think I should track the original ESP buyer down or no? I'm thinking I can find him through the dealer I worked with.

Purchase the extended warranty from the last owner for whatever they would refund him?

How simple is it to find the previous owner? Would the dealer you purchased from, assuming they took the trade-in, be allowed to give out that information?

Pretty sure Ford CPOs get a 12/12000 b-to-b warranty (it's limited compared to the original). If you're still within that time frame you could still get it fixed under that, but I would still look into taking over the ESP from the previous owner.

Sure. You just tell others to do it. Congrats on your moral victory. I stand by my first post.

If you'd like to take the moral highground, why not condemn the OP for not seeking out the previous owner to give them the information they need to get the refund they already abandoned? It's effectively the same thing, from a utilitarian perspective.

I had considered this. When I thought about it more, I don't think I would pay whatever it is as it wouldn't be worth it to me. I don't drive enough miles.

I tried calling the guy I worked with on the deal, but haven't heard back from him. I basically wanted them to contact that owner on my behalf and provide him my contact info. I thought that would be reasonable since when he gave the dealer his info, he was in turn agreeing to be contacted by them.

If I have the chance to speak to him, the plan is to explain the 2 options (he seeks out a refund or he signs the paperwork for me, alternatively just hang up on me lol). If he wanted me to the pay the balance I'd probably have him just get the refund. But possibly he wouldn't care, etc.

If I really wanted to be shady I'd just fill out the form myself. There is no information required on it that I don't have (other than faking a signature). I don't really feel obligated, however, to do work for someone else. The original owner should have understood he could get a refund on the ESP should he want to.

And yes, the CPO transfers to me as it is not named to a specific owner, just "Certified Customer".

o_O

You really did that?

Speakers are dirt cheap (decent ones too) and 10x better than whatever your car came with (most likely paper speakers....)

So now you are going to waste all kinds of time and hassles AND pay $75 to transfer warranty?

WOW

WOW

We had to go there for something else anyway. Is that OK with you, father?

Some of us earn money for convenience in other areas of our lives, not to see who has the most when we die.

Somewhat related. When I traded in our GMC last year I went back to the dealer we bought it from to get a refund on the extended warranty. The finance manager had never submitted paperwork for a refund before. I would fathom that 99% of people don't know/bother to get refunds when they sell their cars.

And honestly, why not use the warranty if you've got it?
