Oprah Winfrey has closed escrow on a 42 acre Montecito estate for an estimated $50 million according to real estate sources.
The sale is one of the highest for a private home in the state and the country. It was surpassed in Southern California last year only by the purchase of Castle and Cook chief executive David Murdock's Bel Air home by Global Crossing chief Gary Winnick; however that deal, valued at $95 million also involved a land trade.
The talk show host bought the property, which has ocean and mountain views, from a Southern California industrialist who have been living in the 2000 sq ft stone gatehouse on the property since it was rebuilt a year ago.
The sellers had purchased the property for $14 million in 1998. The previous owners, who had bought the estate in 1935, had built an 8000 sq ft ranch style house on the site in 1957. A 6000 sq ft redwood house, used for guests was also built.
The current sellers undertook a major renovation of the houses and grounds with the help of Corinna Gordon Interior Design of Montecito, who spent nearly three years on the project.
The sellers had planned to hold fundraisers on the estate, which also has a barn, an orchard, two ponds and a lake.
Plans changed when Chicago-based Winfrey came to town in April to shoot photos for her magazine "O". She fell in love with Santa Barbara and made the owners an offer they couldn't refuse.
The refurbishing wasn't finished but Winfrey wanted the property anyway. That suited the owners, who were beginning to think they didn't need such a big home, despite the fun they were having fixing it up.
They were still working on the main house built in the 50's.
The 23,000 sq ft Georgian style home is still six months away from completion, as is the outside area for the pool, tennis court, barbecue pit and patio.
But that didnt faze Winfrey, a real estate maven who owns a penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan and a 160 acre farm in Indiana.
Winfrey, 47, is arguably the most influential and richest person on TV. She is also founder of Oxygen Media, a New York based cable and TV network that caters to women. Winfrey's net worth has been reported as $800 million by Forbes Magazine.

Geez, you would think 50 mil would do a little better than 2000 sq ft in So Cal :D

You know the world just wont be right until we limit the wages of some of these CEOs ;)

Monticito is awesome.. I drive by it everytime I go to SLO. I know I want to buy a house there.. right off the 101, with my own private beach.. I have already seen the house.. someday when I have the money I will buy it.

thats not as bad as a story about a house here in atherton which sold for like 65 million, even though it was appraised at like 3 million only because the guy who bought it wanted the house because he grew up in it or something to this nature.

crazy. :(
I'll look for a link and proper figures.

Dude's been living in the gatehouse while the real house is being restored. ;)

"Word at the conference was that former department store owner Mervyn Morris (Mervyn's) recently sold his 3-acre Atherton spread to wireless communications pioneer Craig McCaw for $30 million or more. And Jim Clark reportedly returned to California from Florida, which has no state taxes, and bought a 20-acre Woodside estate for about $53 million."

I found it... it says "30 million or more..." when actuallity it closed for $56 million dollars. He's trying to sell it back to mervin morris for $24 million. LOL

"Junk heaps"
Muhahahahahahah!!!!

This recalls Bill Gates fighting SantaBarbara (or wherever his house is) over their tax evaluation of his 40,000 sq ft house: They said $60,000,000 he said naw, $40,000,000. Took em to court.

Gates' house has been estimated at $40-$80million. Larry Ellison's house is expected to top $80million. Richard Garriots castle near Austin is up therein cost too(less than Gates' but up there no doubt) , and hes building a bigger one lol.

It's a status symbol. They have to show off how much $$$$ they are worth. Most think that just because they have $$$, they are better than those of us with less $$$.
Money does not buy you love, and happiness. Most of the richest people are the loneliness. They wonder if they are liked just because of the $$$.

Edited for a mistake.

<< Money does not buy you love, and happiness >>

Nor does a lack of money.

<< Most of the richest people are the loneliness. They wonder if they are liked just because of the $$$. >>

Many poor people are lonely, too. They wonder if they are disliked because of the lack of $$$.
Bottom line, I'd rather be rich and miserable than poor and miserable. The human condition IS miserable.
