Escort radar detectors suck....

My 10 month old Escort 8500 x50 blue started self-calibrating all the time about a month ago, finally one day it said Service Required. Called up escort, sent in the x50...

Fast forward to this week, my X50 arrives back to me. Happy to see they threw in an new car power cord, suction cups, and a dash connector, but after all of 10 FREAKING MINUTES of use, its back to self-calibrating and saying 'Service Required'

What kinda crappy-ass-crappy product is this?

Sucks. I  my Whistler. It works, has a TON of features, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Haven't had that problem with mine yet... though it is only about 6 months old. I hadn't read about that being terribly common, either -- do you know otherwise?

yea, ive seen lots of people on radardetector.net with the same prob...

My dad has a passport that has the same problem. I think it is caused by overheating. It seems to freak out after it has been in the sun for a while. Usually if he turns it off for about 10mins it starts working again. Still, pretty sh|tty considering he spent over $200 on it.

Well i keep mine the the glovebox and pop it up when driving. Since in live in FL, its almost always in direct sunlight when im using it.

Well there is your problem. You should keep it out of the sun while you are using it. 😉

You could always tint your windshield like I did. 😛 Or I can sell you an EarlyWarning EW-3001 Talking radar detector for $40 shipped. Supposedly it can detect Ka-POP and has X band deletion. It seems to work but doesn't have the best range. Fine for around town though. Let me know if someone here wants it. Otherwise I'm going to ebay it.

Mine worked fine for about 1.5 years and then did the same thing as yours...it's sitting there waiting for me to get around to it despite being out of warranty. Your story does not make me very hopeful.

Are radar detectors built so you can speed and not get caught or is there a less sinister use for them?

they also tell you where supermarkets are

i have the same unit (well the red one, not blue) and it works great and has been for years now. it has calibrated maybe ONCE since i had it and i havent seen the problem since. they are extremely sensative too (which is good) i can pick up signals a LOT further away than my dad's radar detectirs can

i wonder how many people have still gotten pulled over while using these? lol

I heard they dont help much, because usually when the officer tracks you, they only need to turn it on for a split second.

With a detector that has a (claimed) 1 mile range...odds are high that the officer will gun traffic in front of you before he is a threat. If the detector alerts..falls silent, alerts...falls silent, you know what's up and slow down before you are anywhere near him.

99% of the time however, if the cop is using LIDAR - you = fvcked, as the odds are slim that the laser beam will hit the little detection window on your detector 🙁

My Passport 8500 (not X50) is still chugging along great...going on a few years old now.

Indeed... is the cop is using laser, then he will clock whatever he wants to clock, and you won't know it. In my area, though, radar is used the vast majority of the time, and my detector routinely alerts me well in advance of approaching an officer that's using his radar gun.
