Escaped Pit Bulls Attack Six in Illinois 1 hour, 37 minutes ago

CARY, Ill. - A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after three pit bulls escaped from a home and went on a rampage, attacking six people before police shot and killed the dogs, authorities said.

No charges had been filed Sunday, but McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said it was being investigated as a crime scene.

Neighbors said the attacks started late Saturday afternoon when children going door-to-door for a fundraiser arrived at the home of Scott Sword, 41, who owned the dogs.

"We had music playing, and I heard this bizarre sound," said Debby Rivera, who lives three houses away. "I looked out the window, and I saw a young boy. The dogs were just jumping on him."

"The screams were horrible," she said. The dogs were "relentless, like they were possessed."

The pit bulls attacked the two children, and when the dogs' owner tried to stop them, the dogs turned on him and bit off his thumb, Nygren said. The boy's father also tried to protect his son and was attacked. The dogs went after another neighbor as well.

"The scene sprawled over a couple blocks, it was a very chaotic scene," said Lt. Michael Douglas of the Cary Fire Protection District.

Residents threw rocks at the dogs and honked car horns to try to distract them from attacking before police arrived and shot the animals.

Jim Malone said he and a neighbor tried to beat the dogs back with baseball bats. "He'd hit them, they'd run, and they'd come back," Malone said. "This went on for 15 minutes."

The boy who was attacked, Nick Foley, was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday. His friend Jordan Lamarre, also 10, was in serious condition. Nick's father was listed in good condition. Sword and two others were treated for injuries and released.

Last week, another 10-year-old boy in Colorado was mauled by a pack of pit bulls that attacked him in his own back yard. The boy was in critical condition after the attack, and the hospital said Sunday his family had requested no further information about his condition be released.

The attack in the Denver suburb of Aurora came two days after the City Council banned pit bulls and other "fighting dogs." Owners who already had the dogs could keep them if they paid a $200 annual license fee.

What I want to know is does nobody in this neighborhood own guns?

15 minutes & the best they could do was a baseball bat & car horns?

The owner ought to at least be held responsible in some way...

I'm sure he will be.

Plus, he did lose his thumb trying to stop the dogs.

-edit-

"Residents threw rocks at the dogs and honked car horns to try to distract them from attacking before police arrived and shot the animals. "

Think about that before you bash a cop. To protect and serve.

Exactly right. I've heard Pit apologists try to give that lame "it's the owner's fault, not the dog's" argument many times.

You can't breed a dog for years and years, specifically for fighting, and then wonder why so many of them go beserk and attack people.

Yes, there are bad owners. But if this same owner had a few English Setters instead, does anyone think this would have happened? Plus, would anyone have been scared by a pissed-off bird dog, anyway?

There needs to be some regulation on Pits and simlar breeds. They are just too aggressive, particularly toward other dogs, to be as common as they are.

That's what I'm talking about. Those hounds would have never lived to hear the police siren if that happened in my neighborhood.

This doesn't have anything to do with last nights' discussion with you and Vic, does it? Colorful and quite immature.

It does actually!! I used my Halliburton mind control machine to take over the pitbull and make him go on the rampage.

:disgust:

Pull your head out of your ass man. I have no control over the news other then whos doing the talking on my TV.

That said, I did send Vic a PM for this thread, because I know hes a highly knowledgable person in regards to pitbulls and his input would be valued in this thread.

..back yard breeders have been mating the most aggresive of the breed resulting in a super aggresive land shark. Time to put the kabash on all of em.

Yup..has to do with last night..can't you just let anything drop? What, do you feel like since there was no "winner" to his and your debate that you must egg it on even more? Seriously. This isn't Crossfire ;)

It has nothing to do with last night. Its simply a fluke in the timing. I would have posted the article regardless of last nights little escapade. I dont know why you would assume it has to do with last night.

Tell you what. Just so you guys dont think I'm baiting Vic I'll do this (Although, I'm NOT trying to bait him).
If (or when) Vic posts in this thread I wont post 1 more post in this thread. Wont qoute, wont edit, I'll be 100% completely hands off.
Vic sounded like he had first hand experience. Is it wrong to want to hear someones opinion on a subject if they are a "subject expert" (not implying Vic is an expert, not implying hes not. But he seems to know more then the average Joe.)

Hows that?

Two Pitbulls came through my patio window and one of them killed my Daughters cat.

I was taking a shower and heard a commotion and looked through the patio door and saw what was going on ( I had no clothes on).

Jurassic park ( the movie) dinosaurs looked tame compared to the male dog.

I ran and got a pair of shorts and ran outside, the dogs were heading out of the yard down the street and the male charged me a few times, I was hollering at him and they finally went off.

I got my cell phone and called animal control and they said no one was available and to call the police, the police said call animal control, etc, etc.

My GF came home and said I should get out of the house and we saw the dogs.
We called animal control again and they said they were busy.

We told our neibhorhood paper about it and they printed it up in the next paper and People started coming over to my house and telling me they had been attacked or their dogs had been attacked by the same dog.

Then a women came by who lived 2 houses down from the dogs owners and said he always bragged to her that one day his dog was going to tear her dog up good.

So everyone submitted complaints to animal control and they finally went and checked on the people.

Animal control said they would never answer their door when the truck would pull up and they couldnt do anything.

Ive heard on the news where a dog mauls or kills someone, the owners say I dont understand how this happened, the dog is so sweet and good natured.

How would these people act if there dogs mauled there own kids?

I understand people that love there dogs, I had a bunch of dogs growing up and am not attacking anyone.

I just think something needs to happen so no one gets hurt or killed anymore.

I have a friend named "Tuffy", he is a biker and his neihbors dog got out and almost ripped his 6 year old Daughters face off.

It took hundreds of stitches to put her back together.

He grabbed his daughter and took her to the hospital, in the meantime the owner had took his dog to his backyard and shot him.

no prob shooting dogs like that.

what makes the pit bull such an aggresive dog? are they combination of tthe most aggresive dogs?

unnatural selection. as all dogs are a result of. but pitts were selected for insensitivity to pain and being viscious.

and oh sure sometimes its the owner blah blah blah. look how many years siegfried and roy went before one of the tigers sank its teeth into roys neck and gave him a stroke. blah blah blah

It's stuff like this that makes me feel guilty about bashing on the second amendment. still, a katana would have been just as effective with this situation.
