I am trying to add a 4tb 3.5in hdd to my PS4. I am wondering if I got an external HDD with an esata connection, can I just connect to it and then connect to the internal PS4 sata connection?

Yes, though you will have to come up with a way to route a SATA cable out of the PS4. For example, here's a gallery of one way.
