When I shut my PC down my external 2.5" eSata drive (which is powered from separate USB cable plugged into a PC USB socket) remains spinning on Windows 7.

BTW I have 2 partitions one with Vista and one with Win 7. But when Im in Vista when I shut it down.. it doesnt keep spinning and actually shutdowns properly.

The Vista system had the same behaviour as the WIn 7 setup but I changed something in Vista and cant remember what I did. Its nothing in the BIOS its purely a windows thing.

Anyone help ?

Sounds as if Vista (or whatever setting you changed) sends some kind of message to the drive during shutdown to spin down.

USB ports are powered by the 5VSB rail on your PSU, which is always on.

No its not normal for a Hard drive to remain spinning after shutdown... and no it doesnt have an on/off switch.

Ive found the solution.. the problem was the "Marvel 61xx RAID Drivers" .. like all Marvell products they are junk.

I rolled back to Microsoft ones and bingo.. the drive turns off properly now.

Thanks for the suggestions though guys.
