errr.....wtf? Start Menu

Gooberlx2

Well, it was time to do a fresh format/reinstall of Windows XP. So I did, and then did all the windows updates, etc...

Now, somewhere in the midst of installing drivers, programs, etc... my "All Programs" menu in the start menu (as well as any other toolbar menu's I've placed into the taskbar) will refuse to open. Also, there'll be a black box that covers up the left side of the start menu. It's extremely annoying, as you can probably imagine, as I have to restart for it to fix itself.

Here's what it looks like.

Has anyone experienced or seen something like this before? Any suggestions?

Did you completely reformat and erase everything on the previous install?

Things like this can happen with bad installation conflicts between old and new. Perhaps something is wrong with the registry, or even bad hard drive sectors. I suggest scanning the hard drive and performing a repair installation, though I doubt it will help.

If you did a complete reinstallation, then how come the Dell thing is still there?

Gooberlx2, it could be something as simple as updating your video card drivers; I've seen stranger things solved by having the most up to date video card drivers, I hope this helps a bit 🙂

yeah, I removed the partition and did a (slow) re-format. I guess the dell thing is there because I used the windows xp cd that came with it.....I guess they must get customized CDs or something.

I'll do a scandisk as well as update the video drivers again (figures that the one's on dell's website would possibly cause problems).

Anyway, thanx for the suggestions ya'll.
