errors with Memorex DVD+R DL discs

Just tried buring a DL disc for the first time. Not going so well.

I have a 10-pack (actually, two of them) of Memorex DVD+R DL discs, rated 8X. They're "RITEK-S04-66" discs.

I've burned three of them, and this is the result every time:
I 13:19:58 Write Speed: 2.4x
E 13:23:06 Failed to Write Sectors 351360 - 351391 - Reason: Spindle Servo Failure

I 13:24:34 Write Speed: MAX
E 13:26:38 Failed to Write Sectors 207232 - 207263 - Reason: Spindle Servo Failure

I 13:27:53 Write Speed: 1x
E 13:30:31 Failed to Write Sectors 293888 - 293919 - Reason: Spindle Servo Failure

Those are the speeds I selected, but it seemed to burn at 4X every time.

My drive is an LG "HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N". Which is supposed to be a "good" burner. It's been fine for single-layer burning, never burned a coaster as far as I know of.

Are Ritek DL discs just crap, or is my drive crap, or what? I'm using the newest version of ImgBurn to burn the discs, so that should be alright. The machine is a C2D E2140 @ 2.8 stable, 4GB of RAM, 320GB SATA HD, etc.

Edit: I'm running 1.05 firmware, hacked with MCSE to remove riplock, but I now see there's a 1.06 firmware floating around the internet. I'm going to try that one.

Ok, with the 1.06 firmware, still getting the error.
E 13:52:33 Failed to Write Sectors 173600 - 173631 - Reason: Spindle Servo Failure

Memorex is synonymous with crap when it comes to DL media.

The best luck you are going to have with DL media is to get the verbatim disks. And even then, depending on the DVD quality you require there will still be some coasters.

On my best burner using the good DL disks I feel pretty good when I have a stretch where my coaster ratio is only 1 in 4.

100% true about Memorex being crap.
Actually, even their single layer media is garbage.

I don't know about Verbatims being only good for 3/4 though.

We use tons of Verbatim dual layers at werk on all kinds of burners, & i cannot recall the last time one even failed that wasn't due to burn speed being accidentally left too fast.
