Errors digitally ripping CD audio at high speeds...

I tried extracting music from some old game CDs. The music is actually stored as audio tracks on a separate portion of the CD from the game data. However, WMP goes berserk around the 14th track -- the exact spot varies per disc -- and sits there for minutes just making wierd noises from the CD player. The rip of that track and any following tracks on the disc never completes.

However, the CD music plays back just fine in the game, and after a reboot the audio CD will play back just fine in WMP. Only the ripping will fail. I narrowed the problem down to CD read speed. By using Audio Grabber and setting the CD audio extraction speed to the lowest detected speed (i.e. 12x), the process works just fine. Without lowering the speed, I get skips in some of the files.

Is this a problem with my CD drive, physical imperfections on the CDs, my m/b drivers (nVidia SW/IDE for NF4 Ultra), or some kind of wierd game copy protection mechanism?

I tried cleaning the drive and the discs -- no effect.
