I'm having an annoying problem with an external firewire drive under windows XP. Many times, when I try to copy a large file (< 150Mb) from the drive to the computer or vice versa, the transfer will proceed along for a few seconds, then appear to stall out. Windows will report an error along the lines of "Delayed Write Failed", the access light on the drive will be stuck on, and the drive letter will dissapear. I've tried this on two XP systems with the same symptoms. All the hard drives are NTFS. I've disabled write-behind caching on the Firewire drive.

Finally, the REALLY odd bit is that on a third computer, running Windows 2000, I have copied gigs at a time with no problems.

Is this a known problem with XP?

Sounds like you have a Firewire problem - i.e., you are losing the connection somehow on a time out. I would try a different 1394 port or interface.

I have that on 3 computers with XP Pro, and have not had a drop like that in over a year's use.

What Firewire card are you using? Have you installed XP SP1 yet?
