Error with Detonator 6.17

Just installed Detonator 6.17 drivers, and although the system is stable, if I go to display > and then click on the advanced tab, I get the folloiwing error message:

An error occurred while Windows was working with the control panel file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DESK.CPL

What does this mean, and how do I get by it? I can change the adapter via the device manager, or booting into Safe Mode, but can't change any of the advanced settings.

I get this problem with all Detonator 6.xx drivers, but not with 5.xx

Also get the same problem with the official 6.31 drivers. They give me a great improvement over the 5.xx drivers, but can't change any of the advanced settings. Help please
