I have never used 3dmark before but since I finally upgraded my system I figured I would use it just for fun. I installed 3d mark 2001 and when I try to run it it says
"3dmark2001 requires a directx 8 compatible video card"

I am running a Gainward Geforce 3 ti 200 with the 21.83 drivers under winxp. Any idea why I would get this error?

Thanks

Yes, but do you have DX8 installed? If you have, do you have any of the features turned off? or the Hardware acceleration slider turned down too many notches.... that will do it too...

DX8 should be installed on your system - that is the version that comes with xp, I believe. Just to make sure, click on the start button, hit run, and type "DXdiag". this will tell you what version of Direct X is on your system, and it should also tell you if there are any problems with it.

DirectX 8.1 is installed according to dxdiag. I also finally got the 23.11 drivers installed correctly so it doesn't restart my computer but that didn't help either. Under the directX files tab it says "no problems found" When I click on the display tab and click test direct 3d, it gets to the test about directx 8 and gives me an error!! I guess there is a problem. Here is the error I get: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRRESULT = 0x8876086a (3d not available). What the heck does this mean? Obviously my directx8 things are not working correctly but how should I fix that?

I fixed it!! I found a post somewhere and here is what it said:

"Also I have been told that DirectX 8 has a bug in it where Direct 3D Acceleration is
listed as Enabled when it is really Disabled. This is a leading cause of
the "No 3D devices found"...

Open up DxDiag and click on the display tab. Click ONCE on the disable button for Direct3D
acceleration. If Direct3D Acceleration is still listed as Enabled then this
should have fixed your problem. If it is now listed as Disabled then we need to look at other issues. "

I clicked on disable and it said "Are you sure you want to enable" I said yes of course!!! Now all is well. Can't believe is was that simple yet very hard to figure out. Hope this can help some other people as well.
