when I tried to start my system restore I get an error report.under the information for the error report it says "appname:rsturi.exe appver.:5.1.2600.2180 modname: mshtml.dll
modver.: 7.0.5112.0 offset:00050bf6? I have no idea what all this information means, I would really appreciate the help.

whenever I've had a problem sufficiently bad enough to run system restore, and the system restore utility fails, I take that as a sign that the windows installation is corrupted, and you either need to do an overlay install, or a fresh format and install.

but then, that's just my two cents....good luck

what is in overlay install? I think I might have pinpointed what happened before this happened. I recently tried to install Internet Explorer 7 beta edition, and an error message popped up saying that it could not properly install. That is when I've been having problems. I'm running Windows XP on a Dell 4600.

Why on earth would you want to install IE 7 beta? Almost serves you right.

Try going back farther with system restore. Due to the way it works the farther back the better. Try 1 month before the problem.

Your only other alternative would be to try a Repair Install of Windows. Instructions here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
You will not lose any apps or data, but you will have to install all your drivers as if it was a new install, and then install ALL the Windows updates and latest service pack.

If that fails, it's backup data, format and clean re-install.

Hope this helps...
