1) what operating system and service-pack?

2) do you have antivirus software, and if so, what brand & version?

3) how do you connect to the Internet (cable, DSL, dial-up)?

4) got a router, or no router?

5) does this correlate to anything, such as installation of new software, or clicking a weird link in an instant-messenger program, or visiting a new website of a risky nature, or ???

1.) Windows XP Pro

2.) Yes. Norton 2004 (updates current), HouseCall from Trend micro (free online site)

3.) Cable

4.) Router. Lynksys (brand new)

5.) Much of the Software I have is newly downloaded from trusted sites. No IM program. The error shows after boot once the OS has loaded to Desktop.

Now brace for a rude question: is your WinXP Pro legit? and what service pack level is it at? Hopefully SP2 :)

Also, is Norton Antivirus 2004 fully updated, is it using maximum heuristics (Bloodhound settings), are all the optional detections turned on (adware, spyware, dialers, jokes, etc), and is it scanning within compressed files? Check all your option panels to make sure. Has it ever detected a threat? Look in the Reports. If there's threats that it detected, please give the exact names.

If you had some settings that weren't turned on, turn them on and then run a full scan in Safe Mode to make sure nothing got overlooked. It might be good to scan with Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer too.

If nothing else works, consider either rolling back in your System Restore history, or nuking the system and starting over and being extra-paranoid about what you install.
