"error performing inpage operation"

Win2k server...I searched yahoo/google for the error message but only found results where it occurred with a floppy or other removable media, and never a hard drive. I have been trying to copy a large number of files from one hard drive to another over my home network, and I occasionally got CRC errors, so I thought I would try to defrag. When the defrag was done, I became completely unable to access the files.

Don't CRC errors mean the drive is going bad?
Do you have any data recovery apps?
Have you tried running fixmbr from the Recovery Console?

the plan is to do data recovery on the hard drive tomorrow. I was just wondering if there was an alternate fix. I backed up the important stuff before I got the error message, so I'm not too concerned, but I would still like to have what is left on there.
