Error Performing Inpage Operation - what is this?

this is one bad bad error, i have a wd 5400rpm hd in win2k running ntfs, after a week of using it, the drive would no longer read.

windows kept saying 'Error Performing Inpage Operation' when i tried to access it. microsoft said a chkdsk/f command would fix it, but it didnt. fomratting the hard drive also didnt do it, effectively i had to send the hd back to the manufacturer for replacement.

i would really like to know what causes this and how to prevent it in the future.

Common Cause of "Error performing inpage operation" Explained

Edit: It's an NT error message. Sometimes it's caused by a bad block in the paging file. Other times it'll be one of the early symptoms of a failure in a newly installed hard disk.
