I been trying unsuscesfully to format and install windows on an old 40gig hd, I get the hd to reformat but during installation of the OS I never finishes and gives me an error on a file with this extension .vdx , I tried several OS, win 2000 win me, win xp win 98, they never finish a clean install, any suggestions.

try reformatting using dos and fdisk rather than the installation reformatting. if that doesnt work then i suggest trying another cd rom because it appears your cd may not be being read properly. first off try the low level reformat.

dos fdisk should work just fine.
If you tried 3 os's and got an error message on all 3 your problem is
a hard drive that's not completly erased. there is something left on it
that is causeing the the instal from completing.
The drive should be completly erased. the formating will take place
during the os instalation. 2000 and xp do this by default and are your
best and easiest to use. it is possible that your cd drive has a problem
reading the cd's but if it has worked in the past on os instalations
it should work now. did it read other cd's before ?

thanks for the replies, i think I m gonna go try low lever formating, if that dont do the trick then, it could be the cd rom, but I doubt it.
