I have a Toshiba Infinia 7200 computer. It has been sitting for about 2 years and I wanted to start using it again. To my knowledge the CD-ROM drive was working properly when we last used it.

However, when I put a CD into the drive nothing seems to happen. When I try to select the drive from My Computer a pop-up window opens and says "E:\ Is Not Accessible - The device is not ready".

I checked the Device Manager and it says the drive is working properly. There are no yellow exclamation marks and it lists the driver as Toshiba CD-ROM XM-5602B, which is correct.

I am running Windows 98. Can anyone help determine what the problem is and how to fix it? Thank you!

Check the CD for scratches, etc.
also check the CDROM IDE cable and make sure it is in the connector tightly on both ends [mobo + cdrom rear]

The drive optics might also be dirty, especially if the drive spendt its life sitting on the floor. You might pick up a CD drive cleaning kit.

Even if it shows up fine in Device manager still select it and remove then reboot and try again.

If you really want to know if its the drive or Win98 then get a bootable cd and see if it can boot from that cd.
If you do not have a bootable cd then go into add/remove programs, & click on the create disk or startup disk tab (dont remember).
Then click on create disk button to create a Win98 diskette.

Put cd in and leave the diskette in and reboot computer. If you need to go into BIOS and set boot order so that floppy is before hard drive, same goes for cdrom if you use bootable cd.

After it loads startup disk (choose cdrom support) pay attention at the end what drive letter your cdrom is assigned. See if it can read cd from dos. If it can then Win98 is problem.
