Error Message

I've been getting an error message that started just in the last two or three days. I get one of those boxes that pop up when a program crashes asking me if I'd like to send an error report to Microsoft. The process which is crashing is called "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services". I know that this is one of the svchost processes, and I understand roughly what those are for, but what might be causing this problem? It's never happened before, but the last two days or so it's been quite frequent, and doesn't seem limited to any specific action on my part. It's happened a couple of times while I was browsing the internet, a couple of times while I was in Windows Media Player, and a few times while in other programs. It doesn't seem to disrupt anything, but it's making me nervous that something more serious might be wrong. Any ideas? BTW: I'm running Windows XP Home SP1.

A suggestion that may help, but probably won't assist you in troubleshooting the problem, is to simply use the XP restore restore point. Check your event log, determine when the issue first surfaced, and then restore your system to a point prior to that time. It may not tell you what caused the issue, but it COULD eliminate it for you. It may also help in the troubloeshooting if you can equate a system restore point that corresponds with the time you installed software/updated drivers/etc. The system restore should not actually change any data on your system, though, so maybe it will help. Worth a shot.

I think I figured it out. Apparently it was a virus called "Jeefo". It creates a file called "svchost.exe" in the Windows folder which serves to spread the virus to other applications. I spent the last two days cleaning this thing off my comp (lost a number of my apps in the process - stupid AVG didn't tell me it was going to simply auto-delete any file it found with the virus), and haven't had the error message come up since. A few other odd problems vanished as well. It's good to have that cleared up, but now I've got to go through and repair all the damage.
