error message with K7T266 R on boot with cd support

When I tried booting my new system with CD rom support to install windows, I get a message that says "Scanning PCI Bus using Mechanism # 2"? This hangs my system immediatly and I have to turn off the power supply. I removed the PCI cards and reseated them, then it worked, this morning I got the message again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you update to the newest bios I did and had absolutly no problems with the istallation of the K7T266 Pro board or the OS . but that could have nothing to do with your problem .

found this on the promise website. remember the system sees the raid controller as a scsi device!

Resolving the Scanning PCI BUS using Mechanism #2 Error when using the Win98/Win98SE Boot Disk



During the initialization of a Win98/Win98SE Boot Disk the system may hang and display a message that says:

"Scanning PCI BUS using Mechanism #2"

This problem happens under certain circumstances or configurations. To get around this particular issue you will need to rename all of the SCSI ASPI drivers on the diskette, follow the instructions below.

**If you are using a SCSI CD Rom or Hard Disk we recommend disconnecting them while using the modified Boot Disk, as they will not be detected.

-Boot up using the Win98/98SE Boot Disk. When you reach the Startup Menu where you can select whether to start the computer with or without CD Rom Support, press the "F5" Key. This will bring you to an A:> prompt.

-Type "REN ASPI2DOS.SYS ASPI2DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI4DOS.SYS ASPI4DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI8DOS.SYS ASPI8DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI8U2.SYS ASPI8U2.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPICD.SYS ASPICD.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer.

The process can be reversed if you plan to use the disk to Boot SCSI devices in the future.

Interesting, thanks. Since I posted the message, I have been doing some extensive testing. I have found out that I get the error message only when the sound card is plugged in. Does this make sense?

I will try this fix next, after I give my butt a rest.
