Hi there,

I am having problems when trying to install DVD games. The error message varies depending on what game I am trying to install. I have tried installing Sims 2, Oblivion and EQ2 ( all DVDs ), and I either get an error regarding AutoRun or Setup.exe.

The error I am getting when trying to install Sims 2 is: EA AutoRun has encountered a problem and needs to close. When I view the technical information about the error it tells me that the following file will be included in the error report. C:\DOCUME~1\Michele\LOCALS~1\Temp\6183_appcompat.txt

I copied the files from the DVD to my desktop and tried to install it like that, but I'm still getting the same error. I deleted the Temp folder hoping that might do something, but still no luck. I am having a hard time finding info on this problem and would appreciate any help that you all can give.

Thanks so much!

One last thing that might help solve the problem...
I took some of the parts from my boyfriends and built what I have now. The games were running fine on his ( old ) computer about 2 weeks ago.

System Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2700+
PowerColor ATI 9800
Asus A7N8X Motherboard
IDE DVD-ROM 16X

Try turning off your Anti-Virus and/or any security software.

You might also open the Task Manager and turn off all the "User" (likely "YourName") tasks EXCEPT explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe.

DO NOT end any System, Network or Local Services!

Hope this helps.

And welome to the AT forums!

Hi JustaGeek,

Thanks so much for the welcome and the reply.

I tried what you suggested and I am still having the same problem. I am scouring the internet trying to find a solution and will post it here if I find one. Thanks again for the help. :)

I hope you just deleted the files in the Temp folder, not the folder itself.

You do need this folder, so if you removed it, re-create it in the same directory.

Another option would be to run the System Restore, if there is a Restore Point before the problem occurred.

Good luck!

Well, I put in an old DVD drive I had laying around, and it fixed the problem. The original drive played DVD movies just fine, so I didn't think there was a problem with it. I guess I should have tried that first! Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks so much for all of the help, JustaGeek, I really appreciate it. :)
