Error loading sata controller driver during xp pro install

I have an Alienware Area 51 Laptop with dual 100gb drives, 3.6ghz intel cpu, 2gb ram.

Recently I am not able to load completely into windows. I can log into my profile and see the desktop background but no desktop shorcuts show up and neither does the task bar. Opening task manager shows explorer.exe is not running. When i start it it shows up in the process list and then immediately dissapears. I'm able to run "new tasks" and load the mmc but am unable to run any snapins. I can't load device manager, add-remove programs, etc. This same thing happens in safe mode in any profile including the administrator. I can't figure out why explorer will not stay running.

Soooooooo, I decided to try to use the Alienware XP pro sp2 oem cd to run a repair install of windows. Windows cannot find any hard drives. I downloaded the promise non-raid drivers from the Alienware site and connected a usb floppy drive.
While loading the driver from floppy, this is the error I get:

"File \WinXP\UlSata.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 2113 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c.

Press any Key to continue."

What is this d: drive? There is no xpsprtm folder on the floppy or xp oem cd. Is this a folder loaded into memory?

Thanks a bunch,

Zero
