Error loading operating system

I just hit CTRL+P to print a document and a little alert window came up saying that something had failed reading/writing to c:\documents and settings\........ (dont remember the path) and the computer froze. I couldn't do a single thing but hit the power button. When I restarted the computer, I get a simple error saying "Error loading operating system". I have checked the BIOS and the hard drive is still detected.

After doing some Google searches, most people ran into this error after installing Windows. I didn't, I have had Windows installed for years. It also said to try changing the hard drive access to LARGE instead of AUTO in the bios, of which didn't fix anything for me.

I figured it had to do with the MBR, but before I started playing with that (in fear it may format or screw all my data), I took the hard drive out, put in another system, booted up Windows from its primary hard drive and double clicked on my "error loading operating system" hard drive via My Computer and it says "The disk in drive E is not formatted, do you want to format now?".

Any idea's, suggestions? I would like to keep my data the way it was on the hard drive, or at the very worst, be able to get in via some program in DOS or linux based that will allow me to copy a few directories which have important data.

You could try a linux live cd to view the contents, or try one of those free trial hard drive recovery utilities while it's hooked up as a secondary drive.

It sounds like something bad happened to your hard drive, so if you are able to view its contents somehow, copy the data over you want, reformat and try again. If you still have problems, RMA it.
