"error loading operating system" it says that

Any idea what's going on? The cd is fine as I just used it on another pc.

I deleted all partitions and then created a new one then let it format. After format it loads the needed files and then reboots.

Once rebooted, it says "press any key to run setup from cd rom" I dont do anything and let it load from HD and it says that....

The BIOS has exhausted its list of places to try to boot from and found nothing resembling a bootloader in any of them.

I tried the things like using a smaller partition and reformatting using the Western Digital Diag diskette. I'm still getting same issues. I've used other drives on this before not too long ago.

make sure the hard drive is right after the CD in boot device priority you might have floppy, cd, HDD1, and your Hard drive is HDD0.

MIke

Hmm, if you are booting to the CD, then it should find your Windows installation and boot it automatically. Did you run any integrity checks on the harddrive with the Western Digital Diag diskette? Maybe boot to the recovery console with the CD and run a chkconfig on the drive.

go into your bios settings and in the hard disk option and choose large or the one that starts with an L...i forget, LBC or LGR or something like that.

WOW! I finally fixed the problem after googling and reading a bunch of Threads, ok, this is what i did: I set the BIOS for detecting the drive to LBA not AUTO. Yep, so simple yet so effective. Hope this helps other.

I worked on a few things yesterday ran into the same problem. GA-K8nF9 Ultra, 3 SATAs: 1 WD 250 GB and 2 Maxtor 300 GB.

I shut the machine off because I had to look at the connector of the P150 power LED. It wouldn't go on. Had to unplug all SATA cables to reach it. Plugged everything back in (but didn't remember the exact header of the WD drive).

There it was: Error loading OS. I put the Windows CD in and chose to repair. I really don't know what to do there. 😱 Just looked around and did MAP [arc] and noticed that my Windows installation is on E:\ on the WD250. Now that's interesting.😕 The partitions that get the C and D letter are on the Maxtors. These partitions are just a tiny bit smaller (9,8GB) than E:\ and F:\ (10 GB). Before all of this, my system partition C:\ was on the WD drive as it is supposed to be.

I thought of 2 things. Might be way off here because I am not really experienced.

Maybe Windows looks into the smallest partitions first, the ones that have the C and D letters and then gives up.
Maybe I confused the system by plugging the SATA cables on other headers than before.

Didn't have the time yesterday to figure it out. I'll see if I can do what Gl4di4tor did. Hope it helps.

I just bought a Maxtor 300GB SATA2 drive and was running into the same maddening "Error loading operating system" error when attempting to install XP on my new drive. Thankfully, I read Gl4di4tor's post and started poking around in my bios. I entered the drive properties section of the basic drive settings screen, and changed the drive mode to "Large." I then saved and restarted, and XP setup loaded just fine.

Thanks a million, Gl4di4tor. It would've taken me a while to figure that one out on my own.
