When I installed SP2 I got the error messages:

Update.exe Application Error
The instruction at 0x0112af90 referenced memory at 0xffffffff. The memory
could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

Followed by:

Update.exe Application Error
The instuction at 0x77f581bd referenced memory at 0x08055800 the memory
could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program.

Windows update shows the install status of SP2, it has "failed". When
looking at the details, it shows the error code of D0000005. When I reboot,
the computer comes up normally, and the System Properties shows that Windows
XP Professional Service Pack 2. Windows update no longer shows or gives me
the option of installing SP2. The computer seemed to run fine, (but I had to go
to work and so I have not tried running any applications yet). I am thinking that
I will uninstall SP2 and try installing it again when I get home. I am also wondering
if the errors suggest a problem with my RAM, or if they may be related to the ongoing
problems I am having described in another of my posts:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1380129&enterthread=y

(I am updating to SP2 to see if it corrects the issues mentioned in the above thread).
If anybody has any advice or suggestions, let me know!

I'd download the full version of SP2 from microsoft, and try to run the update from safe mode. It sounds like you have something that conflicted with the install of it.

I would try to resolve your BSOD issues before you attempt to update to SP2. It sounds like you may have some serious driver or hardware problems, and troubleshooting your SP2 install is going to be difficult if you don't resolve those original problems first.

Number one tip for your P4C800-E Deluxe: relax your memory timings to 2.5-3-3-7 and for that RAM, I'd use 2.8 volts. The i875P chipset's allergy to low-latency RAM was such a headache when it first came out, that I even made a step-by-step guide to relaxing timings & boosting voltage for your board's predecessor in crime, the P4C800 Deluxe... lessee, that well-worn thread can be found... right here.

Give it a try :)

And my #2 tip, since I've got the manual open here, is to park your Audigy 2 in PCI slot 4 and disable onboard Firewire since the A2 has Firewire itself (and the FW shares the chipset IRQ with PCI slot 4). Alternately, slots 1 & 5 share an IRQ but only with eachother, so you could put the A2 in one of them and leave the other vacant.

Thank you for the tips!

I will give them a try and see if the problem gets corrected!
