Error installing software in WinXP

This is the error I get when I try to install HL2 on my Laptop. I am using AMD 3200+, WinXP Pro SP2 (just updated), 512 RAM and Xpress 200 (128 MB Dedicated) video card. The game is the Collectors Edition DVD and I was able to get into the installer on my old desktop.

EDIT - Since I posted this in the games forum, I have discovered that a lot of programs will not install and I get the same error. Please help.

Did you do any "tweaking" of services? Looks like the Windows Installer service has been disabled on your machine. Check under services to see if the Windows Installer service is set to disabled.

If it's set to automatic or manual and it still does not work then try this kb article

Reinstall XP? Sometimes windows does that.

Is there a way around that? I have just installed it and copied over a lot of important files

Go to Microsoft's site and download the latest Windows Installer update. v3.1 or v3.2 should be current.

I tried that article and now my computer hangs after the login screen. Only the wall paper loads up.

I did that before posting here.

I guess the only option is to go home tonight and repair XP using the recovery disk

Good point - repair is a better solution than reformat . I completely forgot about that.

Or if you havent already it might be easier to boot into safe mode, than use system restore to go back to before it was hanging on log in, and reapply SP2.
