Friend of mine is having problems burning cd's (*.wav files in particular)on his new Philips CD-RW...exact error received is Error Finalizing Disc. He is using the bundled Philips burning software. Quick system specs: AMD 475, 64 Ram (PC 100), 10 gig HD with win98 and win2k partitions, the burns are being run on the win 98 partition. Has tried slowing down burn speed to 2x but still gets error. My initail suspicion is either software or memory probs but we are in need of outside tech help :) Cheers and thnx in advance....

Is he burning the .WAVs as an audio CD? It sounds to me like it is having a problem writing the disc's Table of Contents and closing the session. How far along is the progression bar showing the burn is when he gets the error? And is the error always at the same point? Does it happen with every disc? If not, what is he burning when he gets the error? Has he tried different media?

yes he is burning *.wav audio cds...yes the problem is with writing the TOC and closing the session...the progression bar is nearly full (estimate 95%)..yes the error is occuring at the same point...yes it happens with ever attempted burn on every disc (4 so far)....and he has only tried one media type (standard 650 MB CD-R...dont recall the manufacturer)....he is gettting back to me on some changes i suggested with his configuration (just trying to free up system resources, etc)...I do not know what "causes" the failures to finish writing the TOC..right now just working on troubleshooting the hardware front...THnx :)

Is he running anything in the background? 1. Start the system
2. CTRL+ALT+DEL one time will bring up a list of what is running. Shut down everything except exporer and systay.
3. Enter the burning app and do the burn.
4. don't so anything else with the system while burning the disk!

Another thing to check is run scnadisk and see if you have any disk errors and then run defrag. That sometimes help fix burning problems.

How is you power scheme set? Tuen off power saving functions!

Writing an audio CD is more intensive than writing a data CD. Has he tried burning a data CD? The prior suggestion is a good idea. You can also msconfig and uncheck what he doesn't need out of his startup. Is he running an antivirus? If so, that should be shut down. Also, what's his system's free resources? I would aim for 80%. Set his computer's primary role to Network Server. And make sure he shuts screen saver off.
