Both of the two drives worked until, one day, I noticed that the Adaptec Direct CD had stopped detecting the CD-RW as a drive that it could use. I reinstalled the Direct CD software (using the CD drive). When I restarted, both drives were missing from My Computer, though they were detected in BIOS. When I looked in the device manager, the drives were listed (respectively as a CD-RW and a CD-ROM), however, they were getting Error Code 31, which said that the proper drivers could not be installed. Using a separate copy of Win 2000 (without SR-1), which formerly had detected the CD drives, I found the same errors. The computer has a BP6 motherboard with a DMA-33 and a DMA-66 controller, but changing over to the other controller does not solve the problem (the only apparent difference between the controllers is that the Ricoh CD-RW is is named as a SCSI device on DMA-66). I am totally stumped about what happened. I have checked multiple drives on multiple controllers with multiple OSes. I (successfully) tried updating the firmware for the CD-RW, but I still cannot use either drive in Windows.
