I do a

Start--> Run--> services.msc

And try to set Automatic Updates to automatic. It is currently disabled and stopped. I switch it to either manual or automatic and hit apply. Then the start button goes from gray to black. However if I hit that start button I get the following error:

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Any idea why? This is windows XP.

I had the same problem last night, the system I was using had some spyware/virus issues. After running the usual anti spyware and anti virus apps, I use a program called dialafix,

It help restore it, also used it with combofix, roguefix and smithfix. If I wasn't posting this through my blackberry I would link it. But check the security forum, that's where I got the help from.
