error 0200: failure fixed disk 0 < Help

A good friend is receiving this error just after post on his sony vaio laptop, model number: PCG-GRZ615S.

I believe this to be a failed hard drive, but im not sure.

If anyone could enlighten me to a definate answer I would appreciate it.

Yeah, it's probably the drive or board, and I don't know that notebook but if it lets you pick boot drive order then set it for the ATAPI and have him run the recovery console from the XP CD. You can try to run chkdsk on it but of course if it won't even find the drive at that point you're SOOL. I fit does find it you can try fixboot fix MBR chkdsk /r/f or even a repair install I suppose. I'd also open up the access panel to the HDD and make certain it's fully plugged in to the power and data cables. Bump for someone with more specific knowledge on this notebook. BTW, if you haven't posted this in the SFF, notebook forum then I suggest you do so.

I forgot to point out that its tempremental.

He says its mostly in the mornings (cold boot?) when he turns it on the first couple of times it gives the error, but the 3rd or 4th time it will be ok and then he wont have a problem after that.

Im curious myself as to what it could be, but my thoughts still lie in it being the hard drive.

It may be that on the first boot the drive is taking too long to get up to speed and indicate "Drive Ready". There may be a parameter in CMOS to select a delay in the boot process before testing the drive for a ready condition. Some machines have this option.

you see, the thing is, he was not receiving this error before
