Erratic Mouse Driving Me Crazy! Help Please!

My mouse is going nuts! Sometimes it hangs, sometimes it's slow, other times it works fine. There seems to be no pattern to its odd responses.

Any idea where I can look to fix this?

Is it clean internally? If not then get a cotton bud and clean the rollers and wash the big ball(running hot water is sufficient).

P.S. something might be eating resources, when my modem initialises the mouse stalls... try and see if it occurs when you do something specific
