Erratic idle...

I have a 91 maxima that had an erratic idle recently, so I sent it to my dads shop to be fixed.

The first thing he noticed was oil leaks, so he did my valve cover gaskets, which was a pain.

He said that the VCG might not be causing the erratic idle, but either way it needed fixed and he'd check everything else out.

While doing my VCG he said he noticed the distributor was all screwed up, so he ordered a new one.

Could this be the source of an idle issue?
 
could be anything I'd google for it your year/model as it might be a common issue. Else it could be a leak in any of your hoses, air in cooling system, throttle body needing cleaning etc.
