Okay, to preface this - I don't really go out to nice restaurants much at all. Once in a blue moon.

I took my girlfriend out Saturday night to a decent place before prom with a few friends, and when I got the bill back, I was slightly confused.

They charged a 20% service charge, and then a mandatory 15% tip on top of that.

The 20% was totaled in for the tip, too.

....What exactly is the service charge? I was really confused. lol

Some places will put an automatic gratuity charge when there are parties of x or more (8+). That is usually stated on the menu.

You should challenge the service charge

Yeah generally 8 or more people makes them add mandatory gratuity. Not sure wtf that service charge is though. Did you use a special table?

8

Some restaurants automatically add a "service charge" or "gratuity" for parties over X # of people. Often that # is 6.

Having both added seems kinda weird. I'd inquire.

Nope, it wasn't even by one of the windows (some had incredible views). I asked the waitress and she just told me it was part of the bill?

We were already running late so I didn't bother to fight it. =

Butt rape charge? Some places charge like a standard 20% gratuity for large parties but I didn't think a tip would be required on top of that.

Thats what they charge to poor people, and non-celebrities. It's a not being famous tax.

Hmm, some dude paid like $800 to get his car door unlocked.

Leave it be, and next time don't leave the restaurant unless you're content with the bill.
