hey guys. I have a work t42p lappie. Since I'm going away on business for a week, I wanted to transfer some songs/vids to it in order to break the monotony of the trip. easiest way I thought was to change the settings for "Computer Name" in system properties from domain to workgroup so it could join my home workgroup and I can share files from my desktop. well problem is after I restarted it asks for a password I don't know. I tried everything I could think of but no help. is there any way I can get the lappie to switch back to the original domain so I can actually use my computer?

For the record, there is no need to disjoin the domain/join the workgroup for filesharing.

1. Don't use Network Neighborhood, it's crap
2. use unc paths, or if needed, unc paths with ip's (\\server\share)
3. Buy your netadmin a case of 'Dew for fixing the lappy for you.

I can't believe MS allows non-administrator accounts to disjoin or change a workgroup/domain setting.

you will definitely have to have a tech or administrator join you back up to the domain. if you are going to need domain email or files while on your business trip, you will need to have this done before you leave, otherwise you will be left without access.

remember, this is your work computer, not your personal computer. you don't have it to anything that you wish, you have it to be more productive for the company. next time throw the music on a cd, it's much easier that way ;)

For future reference you don't need to be part of the same workgroup to share files.

Share out a folder on Box A. From Box B do start>run>"\\<ip address of
Box A>\share".

Make sure to check connectivity between the machines before trying to access the shares.
