I'm thinkin', I don't like putting aside like 3 hours every month or two to just plain organize my desktop! I'm just looking for a simple program that can match wits with me! It's not that hard, I'm not a rocket scientist... something like the 'put all unused icons here' ap thingy that comes with windows only slightly more complicated, so it'd put the media players with the media players, the games with the games, the avis with the avis, the docs, pdfs, txts, maybe even jpgs, pics, gifs etc all together and so on. How hard can this be?? ALSO is there a backup program (preferrably free) that will rename files for me according to their version etc? Can't you automatically find that info based on the tags these exe self installs are set up with??

How difficult would it have been to think of such issues BEFORE yoiu cluttered up your desktop.

Bit the bullet and fix your mistakes the way YOU need to, not according to some-one elses rules.

Why not put all the files (avis, gifs, pdfs, etc) in their respective "Documents" folders (Music, Movies, Pictures, Documents)? I never understand why people save these types of files to the desktop when there are perfectly good preset folder hierarchies to aid in organization. Both Windows and Linux offer this, and I'm sure OSX does as well.

this is not for just my desktop, this is used by my roomate too. I won't say I don't leave icons strewn here and there sometimes, but it does bother me a whole lot more than it does him. and why does everything have to turn into an inquisition?? I just asked a simple question, jeeze.

hmmh, well my particular situation is like, I like to review amvs during my free time see. I don't intend to keep all of them, only the ones I like, so I just download them, watch them, and move them or delete them. Sometimes it takes me a little bit to get to them though, so the clutter builds. These particular files aren't so bad, but when their combined with nasty shortcut icons, notepad notes I have to jot down real quick cuz my damned internet connection keeps dropping on me. So, yeah, most of these files are downloads and firefox just drops everything to my desktop... I could take the time to redirect it every time, but... why waste the time if 9 times out of 10 I'm not gonna keep it.

so no, Virginia, not everybody's like you. There are uses for such a program.

Because it's usually better to find the root cause and fix that instead of band-aiding over top of it which is what the software you're asking for would be doing. No piece of software will ever be able to automatically organize all of your stuff properly.

You could tell FF to drop them somewhere else by default.

This is what I do: I usually save my files into the desktop, because like the OP, more often than not I'll end up not keeping the files, but I like to keep them around for a few days while they are still pertinent. If I just save them by default on different dedicated folders I'll likely forget about them.

So on my desktop I have a shortcut to a folder which I named: "Files to be relocated", or whatever. At the end of my day, I just toss all the new files from the desktop there. If by the end of the week I'm sure I have no use for those files anymore, I delete them. All the others I then move to their corresponding folders sorted by file type (mp3s, docs, etc.).

Works for me and my desktop is always clutter free :)

lol hello! people, roommates, ever heard of them?? -_- of coarse I want a bandaid, you just can't compromise with some ppl (my roommates... not you all bundles of joy). I know I could just get them to get their own s/ns and do the log in/ log off dance, but they don't get on much... only thing is, they mess everything up when they DO get on.

So what I'm saying is *I* am lazy (I do NOT want to work with my stupid stubborn roommates on this! I already tried! Their stupid!), *I* want a bandaid! yes or no, are there programs like that. Maybe something as simple as something that looks for the associated program and puts all the associated files together. I'd prefer a program that's smart enough to put Acrobat Reader with the rest of the accesories and IE, Firefox etc all in a nice 'Internet Browsers' bundle, but if that's still something I have to do manualy than... so be it. What ever happened to ID3 type tags for executable files???

Just make a guest account for them! :) Logging in and off takes a second...just leave your PC locked at all times and train them to use the guest account :)

I shudder at the thought of other people logging in into my admin account...first because they might break something, and secondly, I don't want them to stumble into my pr0n stash

You stated the proper solution right there, give them their own account and force them to use it. I'm actually a little surprised, although not much, that you let people use your machines under your login when you're not around. The only time I let anyone touch my machines is when I'm standing there watching them but if I had to let someone use one of my machines when I couldn't be there the absolute least I would do is give them their own account.
