Staples is currently selling the Ericsson R289LX and R280LX for $9.50. No rebates needed. I know this phone is an older model, but for $9.50, you can't beat it as a backup/spare phone. The great news also is that you don't need to activate a new line of service to get the phone for this price. So current AWS users can purchase the phone, call customer service and just have them switch over the service to the new phone by giving them the ESN number on the phone. Anyways, I found that both Staples in Bellevue and Bothell, WA have the phones in stock and at this price. There were about 4 left at the Bothell store and 3 at the Bellevue store.

BTW, for all of you "Need An Emergency Phone" people out there, I used to work for AWS and I know for a fact that you can still dial 911 from any wireless phone even if it doesn't have service. So you could always throw this phone in your glove compartment for "emergency" usage.

That is real good information beezerdeals. Do you know if this is true for all the carriers?

I don't know if it's true for all carriers, but I would assume so. If anyone knows different, let us know. I do know that if you dial "611" from a phone without service, it will route you to the Customer Service Department of the carrier you're picking up on. I used to get a lot of calls from customers whether they were AT&T or not, who had dialed 611 from their old phones to see if they were still working or not when I worked at AWS.

Do you have a Staples SKU number for these phones?

My receipt doesn't show the SKU, but it has a long number which is probably the Product ID: 797553006886. If anyone knows where I can find the SKU on the receipt or product itself, let me know.

Not to thread crap, but my wife I had the R289LX through AT&T Wireless for a month or two, and we hated this phone with a passion, and ended up replacing it with another model from Nokia. For around $10, it's an okay deal, but most carriers will give you this phone for free when you subscribe to their service. Again, not trying to discourage anyone who wants in on this deal, but I would definitely look at a functioning R289LX and play around with it for about 10 minutes, entering number in the phonebook, etc before making a final decision.

Actually, I agree with you, the phone is definately not one of the best out there, however the nice thing is that you don't have to start new service to get the phone and therefore you can keep it as a backup if you lose or break your current one. I currently have a Nokia 8260, however for the last 2 days, I've been using the R289 to make sure it works and everything is fine and for sound quality, I haven't really noticed a difference between my 8260 and the R289. Neither have people I've talked to on the other end. But it also really depends on your location and level of service in that area, so YMMV.

Picked up an R280LX today! You should have seen the look an the guys face when I asked him to scan it to check the price. He said,"That can't be right." and proceeded to check the Staples online inventory and saw that it really was $9.50 everywhere! For a minute I didn't think he was going to sell it to me. :)

Thanks beezerdeals.
