Ergotron LCD arms and Dell 2407 (or other large 22" - 24" LCDs)

Does anyone have any experience using Dell 2407 or 2405 with any of the Ergotron LCD arms, in particular 45-174-300 or 45-172-300? I wonder if 2407 is too thick (which moves center of gravity beyond recommended 1" from the mounting plate) or too heavy to be used with one of these arms. Other than a potential problem holding the position stably with a heavier monitor these arms seem to be a very ergonomic and space efficient solution (as well as not as costly as many others).

I was shopping for an LCD arm for a 20" monitor earlier this week, and looked at some reviews for the Ergotron arm you mentioned. There were some comments about the arm not being able to keep larger (>20") monitors from drooping due to an inability to secure the hinge connecting the arm to the monitor. Here is the link to the reviews I am referring to:

http://reviews.compusa.com/2795/933398/reviews.htm

I decided to ante up for a Chief Mfg-made arm, as I currently have one of their dual-monitor stands supporting a 2405 and a 2007FP, and the quality is absolutely exceptional- no problems with drooping whatsoever, and a wide range of adjustments. The adjustable arm I purchased (model # FCG-110) was considerably more expensive ($170 shipped), but it holds my 20" LCD with no trouble, and I have no doubt that it could easily handle even a 3007. If you do not need quite as much flexibility in movement, there are other models of equal quality closer to the $110 price range.

I am currently using an Ergotron LCD arm, the 45-172-300, with a heavier then normal 20.1" LCD. It would droop after a few minutes, so after a quick call to their tech support I was overnighted a set of replacement washers that worked like a champ. They have held up almost a full year so far with no problems.

CCityInstaller, thanks for the data point. I've come across in some reviews that people were able to get some washers from Ergotron that would fix the tilting problem. Would it be too hard for you to look into you monitor's manual to check its weight and depth? Thanks in advance. For reference, Dell 2407: depth 7.68", weight 14.3lb.

Dawza, you would be able to post some sexy picture of the FCG-110 setup? I really like the looks of Ergotron and was not impressed with FCG-110 ... but may be I was just looking at all the wrong pictures in the FCG-110 case.

Will do- check back later tonight.

Chief products mostly have a heavy, no-nonsense, industrial look to them. They are not the most aesthetically pleasing, but construction and quality-wise, they are impressive.

I am not much of a photographer, and some of the angles are slightly retarded, but here you go:

As you can see, the possibilities are numerous with respect to position with the FCG-110. If you want any more angles, let me know.

Dawza, thanks a bunch! You do have quite a bit of LCD estate there! I bet you're secretly laughing at those people who're trying to decide between 20" and 22". This FCG-110 does look solid. Now I have to persuade myself that I can really afford what it costs. Thank you one more time!

You're welcome :)

The pixels come in VERY handy for processing data, although I do admit that three monitors is pushing the upper end of practicality (even for me).

If you do decide to go with Chief, thenerds.net has the best prices around. Their customer service according to resellerratings is questionable, but there really is not much that can go wrong with an LCD arm.

I am not 100% sure of the exact weight of my LCD, but I seem to remember it being somewhere around ~12lbs since it has an included speaker bar. AS far the depth goes, it is roughly 3" from the LCD mounting plate to the front of my LCD.

Hey dawza, did you get the LCD arms from nerds.net? Because I can't find the black version.

JackBurton- If you search for fcg-110, you will come up with this page:

http://www.thenerds.net/index.php?page=productpage&pn=FCG110

That is the one I ordered, and although the picture depicts the silver version, I received the black one. The current price is $178.25 with UPS shipping, but you can use GCO for $10 off, and there is another $5 code that can be used with Google checkout, which should be easy enough to find on any of the many coupon/discount code websites. I was able to get mine for $163.25 shipped.

For some odd reason, searching for FCG-110B turns up the same item priced at over $220. In any case, the item I received was brand-new and fully functional, so I see no reason for paying the additional $50.

That's exactly what I did, and came to the same item you did. The grey arm threw me off, so I might call to make sure I get a black one.

Thanks dawza!
