Is it better to be in front of the monitor in a dim room, or a bright room?

I've found when the room is dim, I'm more prone to eye strain. I also heard you should have the light either overhead, or behind you.

other thoughts on the brightness level??

I'm lucky, my halogen torchlamp is positioned right above, and behind me. :)

I tend to remain more optimistic about my computer activities if I have a source of natural light, when there is no natural light I try to reproduce it. Of course I would be alot happier if my fiance would let me get that 55" Flat panel monitor. ;)

I just bought an Eclipse computer light that sits on top of my monitor. The thing simply rocks. I played Half-Life (bought them the same day) for 5 hours straight any zero eye strain. I normally gotta take a break from the computer after an hour. The thing rocks. I bought it on a whim really. I'd seen it a thinkgeek and kinda wanted one, but didn't like the idea of ordering it not knowing if I would like it and didn't want to deal with the hassle of returning. Saw it at Best Buy for $29.99 and that sucker was mine!

It's awesome!

BTW,
The reason that I asked about brightness is this: Most of the computer graphics/ computer science professors in my school has their office a little dim.

I was wondering if that's related to monitor and eye strain.
