Era of DVD extras may disappear....anyone else aware of this?

Here is the link (from MSNBC)

Apparently, actors and directors and producers are demanding outrageous amounts of money to sit their butts down for 2 hours and talk about the movies they starred in (narration for dvd special features)

This is driving costs for producing dvd's up, and therefore we can expect much less in the way of insightful extras in future releases.

Does this piss anyone else off? How could someone who is probably massively ego-driven NOT want to hype up a dvd release and be given the ability to narrate over something they put so much effort into????

I'm sorry, but these people need to seriously re-evaluate their lives...

<< If I earned millions every year, then yes. >>

That's a load of horse crap. DVDs have become big business, why shouldn't these people get their cut? Why should the studios take it?

<< Oh, I'm sorry. Do you work for free? >>

If i played a major role in or PRODUCED an entire motion picture, i would have no problems doing a little commentary for it

You are correct...I suppose I wouldn't work for free...but the article mentions people demanding TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS to do this.....now THAT is ridiculous

$10,000? On a $50+ million movie? how is that significant?

I never watch them anyway. Who cares about what some actor thinks of thier character in the movie, really?

i don't think it will be an end...... some people are cool, and there will always be sceans that were cut out, and the "how did they do that" special effects stuff

How much extra does a studio make just from an actor's commentary on a DVD? This isn't free labour for the studio, it's a courtesy for the viewer.

Are you serious?? Give me a break! You don't think the studio can market a DVD better if it's got a TON of features? Do you not think they can charge more for it, too??

That might be true in some instances, but IMO commentary alone isn't worth paying more.

I see your point, but the Star Wars DVD had/has tons of extras, with deleted scenes, HOARDS of commentaries, special effects things, behind the scenes, preperation, etc. etc. etc! The DVD was only what, 22.99 reg. price for the 2 disc set?

THAT'S a good deal!

Anyway, continue on... 🙂

And you're allowed to have that opinion. No one should be asked to work for free. You don't do it at your job and they shouldn't have to do it at theirs, regardless of how much money they make a year.

I'm sure Lucas got all sorts of deals with the production of the DVD and got it at an incredible rate, thus allowing them to sell the DVD for cheaper than usual.

wow..you're really animated on this subject!

are you a celebrity and not telling us??? 😛

No, I just work in this business and I hate it when people think it's all glitz and glamour and everyone gets paid $100 million a year for doing very little or no work. The truth is that VERY few people get that kind of money and the ones that do work very hard to get there. It's a hard business to work in and it's a hard one to make a living at.

Edit: There's always a level of ignorance people have when it comes to the movie business. It just frustrates me when people who really have no clue as to what goes on in it acts like they have all the facts. Not that anyone here has done it in this thread, but it's something that's rampant on this board a lot of times.

<< I NEVER listen to the narration anyways. I usually just look for deleted scenes and thats it. >>

same here

<< Do you know how much is costs to get a NAME CELEBRITY to do a 2 hour voice over? >>

A voice-over for a feature film that requires days of rehearsing and tedious recording, re-recording, editing, re-recording, mastering, engineering, even more recording, etc is one thing.
Sitting at a table and thinking outloud while you watch the film you were in is quite different.
$10k is fairly small potatoes, however, I bet most studios would rather just drop the extra features than spend the extra money to make them. I knew DVD as it is today was destined to become the same as VHS.

You're right. A 2 hour one of those would probably cost in the hundreds of thousands at least and would take weeks to finish.

hey now...let's not talk like that!

the A/V quality is still what really drives my purchasing dvd's (and i'm assuming the same holds true for many others)....the extras are just really cool...well...."extras"

Nevermind post-production 😛

Hehe...I meant feature-wise the same as VHS. All those extras are really cool, but I see it ending up being a whole lot of previous and just the movie. Maybe a DTS or 5.1 track if you buy the "special collectors' edition"

Although....lately I can only remember how good DVD is in terms of A/V when I watch TV or VHS....I'm like "This looks like crap....oh yeah..."

well, wait a sec here...

most narrations i've seen are from directors / producers....

call me crazy, but wouldn't you think someone whose life revolves around making movies...and whose name is all over a film, and who most likely had complete creative control, would actually WANT to talk about it?

i would think that most young directors / producers would kill to be able to talk about their thought process in making a movie...does that wear off after you've done several big budget flicks?

just as an example...i recently watched the entire narration for "the fast and the furious" simply because i wanted to find out more about the cars and who they used as extras....lemme tell you that was incredibly insightful...i mean, i found out all sorts of very interesting things about it...for instance, they muted all background colors to make the cars stand out! (although i must admit the guy narrating sounded like he had just woken up and was multitasking at the time 🙂 )

i hear ya!

the other day , blockbuster was out of just about EVERY new release on DVD...and had TONS of vhs copies left...so i went home with 1 dvd and 2 vhs movies.

god, i could barely watch the vhs ones....it was just awful

and dolby pro logic! egads!!!! where's my independent surrounds? 🙂
