Well they are showing what happened earlier, but not where he is now, dead or alive.

HE IS ALIVE! THEY THOUGHT HE WAS A FCKING PRIEST since he was praying after everyone else was executed, and he was wearing the cross the woman gave to him. The soldiers got on their knees, took their hats off, and worshiped god. Carter sent him back on a plane and gave him a letter to give to his GF. He said "Tell her...I was lost but now I am found"
