I don't think it really showed him as being upset about the check. I think any upsetness(is that even a word?) was due to the fact that he trusted that guy, and the guy hustled him

If you think Carter is upset about the Money, sheeesh, were you watching the same show??

he was upset because of how guilty the asner character had made him feel about his life about not contributing, hence the whole going to chechnya thing. and he really looked up to the asner character. it was the total betrayal that upset him.
