Does anyone know if it possible to download the patch data and burn it to a CD? I have a friend that is interested in playing, however he is on dialup and in order to get all the files it would take litterally weeks. So I am curious to know if there is a way around this? I might just burn the entire directory structure over several CD's and have him copy over his initial installation, but that is a pretty crude way to handle it.

Does anyone know in this situation?

Thanks,

Gabriel

The way the patching works is it overwrites certain files that were patched. If you can't find out which files are patched, there's now way to know really. Copying the whole directory is really the only way to be sure. Often MMO's have mini patches that aren't even reported, fixes you never hear about, and on broadband you might not even notice. Hell I never notice any Guildwars patches because they are streamlined so much.

I've done the directory copy dance myself. Normally my friend(on dialup) will just come over for big patches. It's a long drive but it's less time for him than to try it at home.

Ok, just as I thought... That is pretty weak then... :-( My EQ2 has been downloading the patch since 8:00 last night... So it has been patching for 14 hours on broadband (I download around 172K/sec)... All I have to say, that really sucks and my friend on dialup will never be able to download this thing unless he keeps his phone line busy for the next month.... He will have it downloaded by the time his free month is up, that is weak.

The game was not designed with dial up in mind. Would you prefer Sony provide less content;)

Nope, I am asking for a feature that WoW has that is far superior to anything SoE has. Called downloadable patch files. I could download the patch and burn it to a CD, then give it to him at work... But SoE has no way to do this... Crapastic in my opinion.

Games require downloading patches, people groan. They integrate patches, people groan. Sorry bud, but integrated patches are best for the future.

Hmmmm, not a real sharp one are you Malak? WoW will allow you to download the patch VIA them or an alternate website. Thus, you have both methods. As for the guy above you, what are you getting at? Your post makes me question your intent.

Back on topic...

I was able to check the date on the files and compile a few CD's based on that. The patch data is around 1.5 - 2 gigs of data... That is pretty extreme. Anyway, I am compiling it to three CD's and will be able to give it to him at work.

If you have a DVD burner, just burn an updated copy to one and give it to him. If you're limited to CDs... don't be cheap, they cost a dime apiece :p What's ~50 cents among friends?

As an aside, when I tried the free 7 day "Trial of the Isle", I was fully patched in 20 minutes. God I love 10mbit cable.

They don't offer both choices because of the reasons you want it. What Blizzard does is a result of their lack of ability to push a patch fast enough on their own.

lol

who is your provider? and is that a business package?

Optimum Online, it's the standard cable service in my area. $30/month as part of the tv, voip & internet deal. Downside (as with most cable) is they frown upon uploading... you do a bit too much (which is virtually none at all) and they throttle you from 1mbit to ~18kb. Oh well, my friends can suffer

Right, well I am not worried about the cost, the cost is fine. I have 100 CD-R's collecting dust anyway and I ended up burning him 2 gigs of data onto three CD's.

I am not so sure about that... I am not sure of WoW's intention. But what I will say is that it is the most successfull MMO in history so far. So as far as I am concerned, whether their reasons were just and true, it matters not, because they have the option.

Think about it from another perspective... I used to travel around the country 2-3 weeks a month for work and in many cases I would not have anything better than dial-up. It is true that many places have it now, but not all of them and it depends on the city. So, what I would do is download the patch to a CD and then apply it. Seems simple, right? That is because it is. You do not need broadband to enjoy the game, but you do need it to download the patches as fas as I concerned, which is why they should have an alternate means to get the updated files.

Think of it this way, the update was 2 gigabytes of data... How long would that take on dial-up? Do the math! See you next month is the answer.

There are several people who travel for their companies and feel the same way as myself, in fact I bet all of them do. You see Malak, you just have a problem seeing other vantage points, which is why you get ripped to shreds in so many threads around here. You need some understanding and tact.

I have just been burning the entire directory to a DVD. An all inclusive patch would be nice though, that initial download is a killer.
