Epson 610 faxing problems.

I replaced an old trusty hp all in one printer with an epson 610. There is only one phone line and an answering machine. When we receive a fax our call notes picks up the fax "message". Usually call notes message taking works when we are on the phone and don't answer when another call comes in. I have done everything epson's website suggest except turn off call forwarding, which is not an option I am willing to do. Are all new printers/fax machines like this? My very old hp did not have this problem. Any suggestions?
