Epson 440 Printer in Windows ME

My friend has an Epson 440 and Windows ME, she asked me to come help her because whenever she tries to print windows says that it can't find the printer.

I made sure that the printer was online, and plugged in.
I then tried to reinstall the drivers (got them from epson's site)
Then I took a printer cable that I knew was working to see if the cable had bitten the dust.

None of it worked.

Any suggestions?

ah, the old Epson+WinMe debacle. For some reason i've seen lots of incompatibilities there, tho most were right after Me was released.

now on Epson's website, I didn't see any WinMe-specific drivers, so your best bet is to go with the Win98 drivers (unless you found something I didn't). If the printer is USB, try this:

with the printer plugged in and turned on, go into the Device Manager (system control panel), find the printer, and delete it.

turn off the printer, unplug it. restart the computer. when windows is booted up, turn on the printer and then plug it in. hopefully it will ask for a driver - point it to the drivers you've downloaded, and install them that way (instead of running the driver installation program).

restart computer, attempt to print.

If you're using a parallel cable, that's a bit different. go into the printer properties and make sure it's trying to print to LPT1.

that fails, call epson 🙂. it's always possible that the printer isn't compatible with WinMe, I suppose.
