I'm heavily leaning towards this scanner. I can get it for around $150 which is the lowest I can find for it. Anyone with one want to share there thoughts on it? I was going to get the 1200U from J&R for $100, but they don't seem to sell it anymore. Maybe someone else can recommend a scanner for around $150 they has many of the same features of the 1240U. Thanks for the info. :)

I used one for about a week until my motherboard croacked and I haven't got the system put back together yet.

Anyway, my initial impressions were good. My biggest thing was the color accuracy and it did a very good job on that. I thought it was very fast for usb. The only thing is it's kinda big if your looking at the Canon's in comparison. Detail seemed good as well.

If you have anymore questions just ask.

I hate that scanner..

The one touch buttons on the scanner and some its software features require an Epson printer. For example, pressing the copy button on the scanner and having a copy pop out of your printer requires an Epson printer.

It says it on the user manual, requires Epson printer.

And my uncles HP printer wouldn't work with it.

I'd stay away from it. There is no reason for this. My Visioneer 7600 works with any printer... I returned my uncle's and bought him a HP 5370, consumer version.

Well if you go to Epson's website it will link you to an update from the company that makes the copy software. Sorry, can't remember who it is now.

It states right in the update that the copy button has problems with some other brands (HP) unless you download the update. I have an HP 890 and the copy button would crash the program until I installed the update. After that no problems what so ever.

I checked.

Epson's site does say there is a patch for the copy button not working with HP printers. But what about with other printers? And that's only the copy functionality.

The included Photo Print software still requires an Epson printer.

Depending on your needs their are two advantages to the HP 5370 scanner:
(i) Included software works with any printer..
(ii) One touch FAX button.

I don't like that Epson required their printer for the included software. And released them with software that required a patch in order to work with other printers. I'd say this may suggest a conscious effort to manipulate consumers to buy their printers. I lose respect for companies who try to sell their products this way. Better to make a better product than the competition.

Plus I don't like top feeder printers.

I'll try to find the url for the update.

All of the buttons work fine on mine. The only software I use is the stuff that came with the scanner.

I can't comment on other brands of printers I only have one. :)
Like I said earlier my main rig is down until I get the new motherboard installed. Should get that done tonight, I'll check into it a little more when I get it all back together.

illkid,
I have used the 1200U along with the HP 6200 and HP 4300. HP's software for both scanners is easier to use and has just as many features as the Epson. Also the output, IMO, is sharper and more accurate on the HPs. The 6200 is a $350.00 scanner, though.

AFAIK, the HP 6000 series of scanners provided the same scanning quality as the 5000 series.

The added cost was for the SCSI and Ethernet connectability.

For someone not interested in connecting their scanner via SCSI or Ethernet, the 5000 series makes more sense...

epsons have generally been rated as some of the highest quality scanners out there for the money.

screw the copy feature, just install the twain drivers and scan into your graphics program.

one touch features save me time and distraction..

why sit down, open up a program, click on black and white (monotone), etc..

when all i have to do is press a button..
