ok this didn't get ANYWHERE in the general hardware forum so maybe I can find a bit of
guidance in here :)

I have some general questions about eproms and "upgrading" them. Since this is about computer hardware(albeit not a home pc) I thought here would be a good place to start for some answers before I spend some $$ Plus I have found people here to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful (Thanks AT community) ,,ANYWAY what I am wondering about has to do with the pcb's used in arcade games. (anyone know a addy for a forum-golden tee specific?) I have seen these pcb's for sale in the diff flavors like GT '97, or '2k, etc. and I also see people selling eprom "upgrades". So the eprom contains the game data that specifies which title('98,'99,etc) it is right? other than that there is no diff between the pcb's of the diff years? So I could say get a '97 pcb and swap eproms to say '2k and be strait? that is what it seems like can be done when they do "conversion" or "upgrades". Also Issue #2, the output (video) of th pcb is in red, green, blue, plus a sync signal, now, is this the same as the y,Pb,Pr inputs my tv has on it.( I know the monitors used in arcade games has crappy resolution,512x340?called raster monitors) SO you see where I am going with this, yeh I want to hook the output to my tv Thanks for any info, or a linky to where I may find these answers.

If you legitimately own the ROM for this game, it would probably be simpler to look into an emulator. You could then just run this game from any PC that had the emulation software and the ROM file.

hmmm, that would probably work too, but what I was tryin to do is to get the arcade "feel" at home short of buying a whole machine. I want to buy the pcb and rom chips to play but I also need the controlers(trackball, buttons), and a monitor to view and I wanted to use my tv as the monitor for $$ and space reasons. Thanks for the idea though.

If you look around, there are plenty of arcade hobbyists out there. There is quite a market for third-party controllers which interface with a computer. You should be able to find a nice arcade-quality controller w/ a trackball and buttons.

If I were you, I would probably just get a cheap computer (probably a VIA-based ITX box, about $200), get a nice arcade controller (probably run you about $150), and then either build the cabinet or salvage one from a local arcade. Of course, if you are going to be emulating the ROM, you need to still buy the arcade board for liscencing reasons.

The video output on the pcb is NOT the same as the y/Pb/Pr. What you need is this rgb to ntsc converter.

As for swapping out the eproms, I have no idea if it would work or not because there might be physically changes to the pcb from one year to the next. When I used to work in the arcade as a technician, upgrading from 00 to 01 usually meant pulling out the eproms and replacing them with new ones. BUT on occasions I had to swap out the whole PCB.
