EPOX EP-8RGA will not post

Need your help. I have searched the forums and am still a tad bit confused.

PC was running fine.

Then one day I turned the PC on and no beeps, no post. The MB reported a warning C3. I believe this means can not initilize DRAM.

I cleared the CMOS and changed the CMOS battery, now the MB is reporting a warning C1.

I removed the memory stick and clean it, and reinstalled it. Still the same error.

What else can I do?

I would hate to buy a new stick of DRAM not knowing if the MB is fired?

Thank you in advance.

BTW when I move the jumper for the CMOS clear the MB was reproting error CF

I lost the MB Manual and tried to retrieve it from the EPOX site, but had no luck.

MOBO is below

XP HOME
EPOX 8RGA-MB; AMD XP 2000+; 512MB DDR333

Did you clear the CMOS with the system turned off and unplugged from the wall? Yes = good. Big picture: the motherboard has almost certainly kicked the bucket.

All of those hex codes (CF, C1 & C3) are related to memory detection and/or R/W.
Have you tried the DIMM in another slot?
Can you borrow another DIMM from a buddy?

What power supply are you using?

There is a jumper on the MB near the words CMOS. So each time I had the power off and unplugged the PSU. I moved the jumper over to cover the other pins and rebooted. then I put it back the way it was. (Did I do this correctly?)

I tried the other DRAM slots, still no luck and I do not have any friends with extra DRAMS.

This PC is my Mother in laws who does nothing but surf the web and play bejelewed type games.

The PSU is Award model WIN-300PS

Any other thoughts guys?

🙂

Coop,

You DO NOT boot the PC with the CLEAR CMOS jumper on pins 2&3.
The correct procedure is to unplug the power cable from the wall of PSU.
Remove the battery and set the jumper to CLEAR (pins 2&3).
Go eat dinner or have a few cocktails or BOTH!
Set the jumper back to pins 1&2 and replace the battery.
Plug the PSU back in and try to boot.
If you get an image on the monitor, enter the BIOS and set to FAIL SAFE or DEFAULTS.

BTW, WTF is "bejelewed"?

Sorry about that my friend. I was rushing around, in and out of the house today.

I meant to say Bejeweled.

Also with the CMOS jumper, Yes this was the first time I even needed to attempt. I did it worng.

Right now I removed the battery and then placed the jumper on 2 & 3. In the AM 8 hrs later I will put the jumpers back to 1 & 2 and them replace the battery and PSU.

Thx...I will report back.

After I cleard the CMOS same result C3.

Guess it is time to replace the Motherboard? Or should I buy a new stick of memory for $35.00? (Muskin)

Is the a PC shop close to you?
They can test your RAM for a nominal fee (or less).

Right now, you can't tell if the MB or the RAM are any good.

OK Instead of wasteing time on this one. Here is my last question.

First off thank you for you replies.

The OS is Windows XP HOME SP2 (Case is ATX).
As I mentioned the old setup which is not working is:
EPOX 8RGA-MB; AMD XP 2000+; 512MB DDR333

Where can I grab a cheap motherboard, CPU (Nothing new or powerful) and 512MB ram?

(Motherboard must have onboard video, sound and Ethernet port)

I will simply take out the old MOBO and RAM and pop in the new items and boot up.

Of course this is not the best idea, but for the type of usage the PC is used for I think it will be fine.

Random errors on Epox mbs, specially older ones, usually means bad caps. Please check if any capacitors on the mb are bulging and /or leaking brown stuff.
