Just installed a Duron 700 in an Epox 8kta2. When I power on, it detects all devices and memory, but hangs around the DMI pool screen sometimes, sometimes at the "failed loading windoze " screen, giving an option for safe mode command prompt, etc. I cannot even get into "safe mode". If I choose to select commands to execute, it eventually gets to a BSOD that reads " A device/system resource needed by VFAT not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue, system halted"....WTF??

Any help would be appreciated!!!!...TIA

good point sandman, I am running win98 not se.

when I loaded safe defaults in BIOS I can get into windoze, but have no CD rom drive from which to re-install windoze, and if I try to install VIA 4in1 it tells me I have a registry error and must re-boot. Can't you install stuff from safe mode??

What system did you pull out? If it wasn't an AMD with VIA chipset, then I highly recommend FDISK and reinstall your OS. This will clear your troubles.

Also, make sure the RAM you are using is good, as in you've used it before with no probs.

When you post questions that are OS related please post the OS that you are running. Then maybe we can help you.

I don't think you can install software from safemode. It's just for troubleshooting. If your registry is corrupt I would say your going to have to delete windows and reinstall. You don't have a CDrom?!?!? Why?? You need to get one. They're only $35. Otherwise. Sometimes when people setup these computers they put the install files on the HD. Usually in one of 2 places.
c:\win98
or
c:\windows\options\cabs

I had this problem before when using pc133 ram and bios set to auto detect spd or 133. Need to set to 100 to get rid of the problem. Bios update 11/20 and later solve this problem.
