Epox 8TKA+ don't like 1Ghz Athlon

Here's an odd one. I purchased an Epox 8TKA+ the other day and it runs, more or less, just fine with the 750 TBird. But I got a 1Ghz chip and the thing won't boot at all. I get all kinds of blue screen errors with 0E and 0D errors. The thing just won't boot. Any ideas why?

Yes, I have the latest drivers and BIOS.

The board is AMD recommended for up to 1 GHz - primary suspect is your case PSU.

Dude - cases don't have watts. 2nd-check to see if the PS is AMD approved/certified whatever they call it. Many times the PS will perform substantially different than it's "watt" rating.

Good luck!

Agree! PSU determine your CPU speed.

Had T750 w/ Generic 300Watt PS, runs 900Mhz @ 1.8V and hang at 950@1.85V.
Got myself a Generic 400Watt run smooth @ 1Ghz @ 1.85V.

This is not overclocking, boys and girls, this is a genuine 1Ghz chip.

400 watts? Jay-zus!

Brute...
You have to understand that the TBird will draw 34.6 Amps @ 1.85vdc Vcore ( from TBird data sheet ). That's just the processor not taking into account the MB, Vid card, Hard drive, RAM, etc., etc... Although these CPUs are great performers, they are pigs when it comes to power consumption. Therefore, when you get to 1 Ghz and above you really need a excellent power supply that can deliver the current as specified. BTW, Durons are easier to overclocker because of their smaller cache = less transistors per CPU = less current draw.

Well that was useful. So what do I do now? Shouldn't it be 1.65 or 1.85? Where do I change that setting?

check your user manual.
Leave your Voltage setting to "auto detect".
If I am not mistaken, it should be around 1.75V

That seems to have done it. I checked the DIP switches for the voltage and it was set to 1.45. I set it to auto detect and the computer is running fine now, so far. Voltage 1.77, temp 105F.

One thing that shocked me was the poor performance in Quake 3. It scored 35 fps while the Athlon 750 was 43.4 at the same resolution/color depth. Something's up and I don't know what.

You may want to read up on OC'ing. I'm not trying to be an A$$ but from reading this thread, it seems you could benefit from freshening up on the different a$pects of getting good results OC'ing.

just my .02 :)

Good Luck

If YOU had read this thread you'd know the chip isn't overclocked, it's rated at 1Ghz

What goggleax suggested is you can try OC your CPU, and get more out of your money. That is if you know how to utilize your mobo, if you are not familiar w/ OCing , you could "benefit" by reading OC forum.
