I've been wondering for quite some time for a certain feature on my Epox 8RDA3+ is used for.

The feature in question is in Advanced Chipset Features -> AGP Frequency

The AGP Frequency setting can either be set to Auto (which i have it on) or increments in MHz from 50-100 MHz. I was curious if anyone has used this feature and experienced any performance gains?

Fire away :)

The AGP Frequency is the speed at which your AGP port runs...the speed of the bus that connects the CPU and the graphics card. It's supposed to be 66MHz. Likewise, the PCI speeds are supposed to be 33MHz.

The NF2 boards feature an AGP/PCI lock, which keeps the AGP/PCI speeds constant at 33/66MHz no matter how high you raise the FSB while overclocking.

Some performance gains can be had from raising the AGP speeds above 66Mhz, b/c you're making the card run faster. That, however, is a tricky thing to do w/o crashing the card and possibly damaging it. Overall a bad thing to do. Leave it on Auto. :)

Unfortunately the manual doesn't provide any relevant information about AGP frequency..

Michael,

When you warn me about not touching the feature. Are those similiar precautions as one would give for even overclocking the CPU because of the dangers of burning it out? I have my chip OCed by approx 1 Ghz and my vid card is also running OCed. I mean if the feature is that detrimental I won't touch it, but I just wanted to mess around with it. See what it can do.

I believe this is a duplicate thread. The feature is for overclocking the AGP bus. Auto is 66MHz. If you adjust higher than this you may run the risk of video stability issues.

In my experience, you often will get poor/unstable video performance when you overclock the AGP bus. Just overclock the card itself if you want to up your video performance.

Having an AGP lock is considered a feature that is particularly useful so you can overclock your processor more. Saying don't touch it has nothing to do with paranoia, it's the guys that are paranoid that don't need it ;)
